Hi again. I thought I heard there was a performance while we were stopped in Mauston on the way to Eau Claire??? I am not sure, but I don’t see it on the Tour Itinerary. Thank you.

In order to fit the trip in one day, we are not able to perform. I still want a performance down here for the community but it now will be after the trip.

Will anyone be taping this for parents who can’t make it?

  4. joinchoir says:

There is at least one parent chaperoning that is bringing a video camera along. I will be recording the audio. I also intend on having a performance in Racine after we get back.

Is this a *required* trip for all kids in GCC? When we talked at open house, you said that only half of the kids needed to go for the trip to be feasible.

If it’s a required trip at a possible cost of $440/kid/night, I think you’re going to find a lot of parents will not be willing or able to foot that bill for an elementary school student. High school would be a little different as the student could work to help pay their way. And I could be very wrong, but I think the current economic climate doesn’t well support that kind of fundraising.

Also, have these sleeping arrangements / security measures been approved by RUSD? Seems entirely too lenient for a place like Reno.

My son has been greatly looking forward to being in GCC all summer. I can’t imagine his disppointment (or mine) if I had to pull him simply because I can’t afford to send him on this trip and/or didn’t want to because I don’t feel comfortable with the security measures in place.

I have to agree with the recent comment on the cost of this trip as well as the security. My daughter has been in GCC for 3 years and absolutely loves being a part of it. But, I do not think we would allow her to go on this trip – not only is it an excessively high cost – it is a FAR way to go for a 5th grader… (this is my opinion). My older daughters (7th grade) orchestra is thinking of doing a competition in St Louis and the teacher sent out a letter to parents asking how many would participate if they went and what the estimated cost was. I think this would be something beneficial to do in this instance. Before parents give over a $50 non refundable deposit and then find out fundraising efforts were not ‘grand’ and they cannot afford the balance and lose the deposit. I know that my child will be just heartbroken if she cant be in choir but this is just not a trip we can sign on for…

The only required part of this is that you be OK with the idea of the choir traveling. You should expect a cost of $200-$300. If it is financially not possible that’s fine, your child can be a part of GCC, perform in Racine and not go along on the tour. The Gifford Children’s Choir is an unusually high performing group. When you have something this special it creates new opportunities and I intend on providing those opportunities. Any 4th and 5th grade parents that are not OK with the kids going on an overnight to another state should consider having their child perform in Caiman Chorus only. 3rd graders in GCC will not be allowed to travel on an overnight and will sing with GCC only n Racine/Kenosha or other day trips. It will be up to the group to decide if the more expensive trips are possible. I personally don’t think Reno is going to work. We will need to discus this at the parent meeting which I am still trying to schedule. Please read the Gifford Choirs page of this blog for other requirements.

It is important to me that you know that if she didn’t go on a trip because of finances she would still be allowed to be a part of the choir and perform locally. Being OK with going on an overnight trip is part of the requirement for being in GCC. If there is no overnight trip you would send her on I would say you should have her be in CC only this year. Other destinations I am considering include Seattle, Cincinatti and South Bend, Indiana.

Thank you so much for the clarification. I am not excluding all overnight trips – just not comfortable with the Reno trip as it is currently described. Thank you!!!

I’m a concerned parent who is uneasy about sending their child on a rode trip overnight…I’m sure others are too. I know not all of the details have been thought out yet but I do need to know about a number of items. First, what are the security measures put into place while these children are in hotel rooms with no adult? Second, how many chaperones will be going to Indiana?
